Leonardo DiCaprio :: Fisker Karma

Feb 5, 2015

Leonardo is well known for his environmentally conscious attitude. Once happy owner of Toyota Prius, Leo remained faithful to hybrid concept, but this time with a bit sporty look. The 2012 Fisker Karma is a plug-in hybrid luxury sports sedan, that was developed in Anaheim CA, by same designer as BMW Z. Resemblance is obvious.

The Karma is a pure series hybrid, driven by a pair of 120 kW (161 hp) electric motors that receive power from a 20.1 kWh lithium ion battery, and/or an engine powered generator. Once the battery is depleted, or when in the “Sport” mode, the front-mounted 260-hp, 2.0-liter Ecotec four-cylinder direct-injection turbocharged gasoline engine powers a generator that sends electricity directly to the drive motors. The total range with a full tank of gasoline and a fully charged battery is 230 miles.

Leonardo also owns an electric Tesla Roadster, which is not bad idea, since Tesla Motors filed a lawsuit against Fisker Automotive for stealing Tesla’s Model S hybrid technology (and lost it).

Pricing in the U.S. started at $102,000 for the basic model, and $116,000 for the top model. Around 1,800 units were delivered in North America and Europe through December 2012. Production was halted in November 2012 due to financial difficulties, with about 2,450 Karmas built since 2011. After bankruptcy in 2013, Fisker Automotive ended with Chinese company Wanxiang. New owners planned to restart production upgrading few features of the car, but as it seems, technology transfer was main reason.

Some politicians are also proud owners of this unusual car, but I won’t mention their names since they failed miserably to enter my blog’s “celebrity” category.
